RENO COUNTY – A Salina man was injured in an accident at a Reno County construction site Tuesday afternoon.
According to a statement from the Reno County Sheriff’s Office, first responders were dispatched to a bridge at 69th Avenue and Nickerson Road, just south of the town of the Nickerson, at about 1:58 p.m., after an injury was reported at the site.
Upon arrival, Reno County deputies made contact with Gonzalo Chavez, 42, Salina, who was lying on his back in the sand near the Arkansas River.
Deputies were told a crane loaded with 4,000 pounds of sheet pile was holding the load about 6-feet off the ground, when the crane operator accidentally took his foot off the crane brake, causing the load to fall. Employees ran to where the load fell and that is when the crane operator noticed he dropped the load on top of Chavez. The operator lifted the sheet pile off of Chavez while other employees rendered aid. Deputies continued rendering aid until EMS and fire personnel arrived at the scene.
Chavez was later transported to the Hutchinson Airport by EMS and flown to an area hospital for further treatment of his injuries. His condition has not been released.
