Salina Fire Department Training Chief, Fire Hydrant Painter to Retire Friday

SALINA – The Salina Fire Department’s longtime fire hydrant painter, who also served as the Training Chief, will be retiring on Friday.

According to a Department announcement, Mark Grosland, a 28-year Fire Department veteran, spent several of those years painting many of the fire hydrants around the city.

Grosland started his career at the fire department by getting a summer job painting the hydrants. Once he was hired full-time on the department, he began his real career as a firefighter progressing through the ranks to a firefighter paramedic, a Fire Engineer, Fire Captain and ended his career as the Training Chief for the Department.

“Congratulations Chief Grosland on your retirement,” Salina Fire officials said Thursday. “The department and the hydrants won’t ever be the same.”
