SALINA – The Salina Central Mall is losing yet another store.
According to information released Thursday, Salina’s JC Penney is one of three Kansas locations that will soon be closed.
The company filed for bankruptcy in May and announced that one-third of the company’s locations would be closed. On Thursday, the company issued a list of stores that will closed as part of the bankruptcy filing. Kansas locations that will close include Salina, Emporia and Liberal.
“Following a comprehensive review of our retail footprint, JCPenney made the difficult decision to close 154 stores,” the company said Thursday l. “We will continue to operate the majority of our stores and our flagship store, jcp.com, to ensure our valued customers continue to have access to the products and brands they need and want.”
The closure ends a run of more than 100 years in business in Salina for JC Penney. The company opened its first location in Salina on Santa Fe Avenue in 1917 and remained there until relocating to the mall in 1987.
JC Penney joins a long list of major retailers to exit the Salina Central Mall over the past few years, following Sears, Dillard’s, Payless ShoeSource, and Radio Shack, among others.
