OTTAWA COUNTY – A Minneapolis man died in a crash involving three vehicles in Ottawa County late Monday morning.

According to a Kansas Highway Patrol accident report, a 2007 Volvo semi driven by John Tibbits, 76, was westbound on Nugget Road at about 10:20 a.m., when he attempted to cross the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 81, near mile post 175.

At the same time, a 2019 Ford F-250 driven by Dalton J. Williams, 20, Hebron, Neb., was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 81 in the left lane, and struck Tibbits’ semi on the driver’s side.

While trying to avoid the crash, a northbound 2015 Kenworth semi driven by Bernardo Tamayo, 59, Dallas, Tex., crossed into the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 81 and overturned in the west ditch.

Tibbits, who was ejected from his semi during the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to a local funeral home. Both Williams and Tamayo were transported to Salina Regional Health Center with suspected serious injuries, the extent of which were not immediately known.

Of the three drivers involved, only Tamayo was properly restrained at the time of the crash, according to the KHP report.
