The Salina Liberty introduced a new head coach on Wednesday. At a press conference, Heron O’Neal was announced as the team’s new head coach. Liberty Chief Operating Officer Ricky Bertz said O’Neal was signed to a three year deal through the 2020 season. “We got the guy at the top of our list,” Bertz said. “That is us being proactive and not reactive.” O’Neal is a graduate of Western Michigan University. At a press conference at Tony’s Pizza Events Center Thursday afternoon, the Salina Liberty named Ricky Bertz as their new Chief Operating Officer, effective immediately. Bertz, who is also currently serving as the Champions Indoor Football (CIF) league commissioner, said that Salina is now his home. Bertz comes to the Liberty with ten years of previous experience in indoor football. Prior to being named league commissioner, Bertz was the general manager and part owner of the Dodge City Law. Wide receiver Joe Kassanavoid, who returned to the Salina Liberty in March, announced his retirement from football Tuesday evening. Kassanavoid made the announcement on social media. “(I’m) walking away healthy,” he said. Kassanavoid was re-signed by the Liberty on March 16th, just days before their third game of the season and was immediately installed into the Salina offense. He played in three games for the Liberty in 2017, catching 16 passes for 124 yards and 2 touchdowns. Liberty Starting Quarterback Out for the Season

Salina Liberty starting quarterback Joshua Floyd, Jr. will miss the remainder of the 2017 season. Floyd confirmed on social media Thursday evening that he had torn the ACL and MCL ligaments as well as the meniscus in his knee. The injury occurred during the Liberty’s 87-42 loss at Dodge City last Saturday. Floyd missed one series after suffering the injury and returned to finish the game. The Salina Liberty has announced that Head Coach Eric Clayton has resigned effective immediately. Clayton’s resignation was announced in a press release issued by the team Tuesday afternoon. Liberty General Manager Francis Flax said current Offensive Coordinator Mike Bonner will be named Interim Head Coach, while a search will begin to hire the next head coach.
