Two Hospitalized After Police Pursuit, Crash in Rice County

RICE COUNTY – Two people were hospitalized after a police pursuit and crash in Rice County early Tuesday morning.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, two Rice County Sheriff’s Deputies were pursuing a 1998 GMC Sonoma driven by Zackery J. Best, 34, Lyons, at 12:45 a.m. southbound 21st Road and Avenue L, about four miles northeast of Lyons, after Best failed to stop for a traffic violation.

At Avenue L, all three vehicles went through the tee intersection and struck several trees.

Best, and a passenger, Andrea F. McAllaster, 32, were both taken to Rice County District Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The two Rice County deputies, Marcos K. Guerrero, 48, Hutchinson, who was driving a 2016 Nissan Rogue, and Casey J. Schrag, 46, Nickerson, who was driving a 2014 Ford Taurus patrol vehicle, were not injured.

After receiving treatment, Best and McAllaster were both taken into custody, according to the Rice County Sheriff’s Office.

Best and McAllaster were not wearing seat belts at the time of crash, while both deputies were properly restrained, according to the Highway Patrol.
