Youth Services at Salina Public Library now has four new Starling word counting devices available for 14 day checkout. The Starling is a device for children (birth to 4 years of age) that allows caregivers to track how many words their child hears throughout the day. The device is made of medical grade plastic and housed in a silicone holder. It can be clipped to a baby’s clothing and counts words in any language. After checking out the device at the library, caregivers can download the free Starling app to begin tracking words. Once the app is activated, caregivers will receive inapp messages reminding them of the importance of reading with and talking to little ones and how their child’s brain is developing.
Recent studies have shown that by three years of age there is a 30 million word gap between children from the wealthiest and poorest families. Early literacy is linked to children’s vocabulary skills and their economic backgrounds. Salina Public Library’s Youth Services Department is committed to encouraging, helping and providing resources for young readers and caregivers.
Starling devices are located in the Youth Services department at the main desk.
