Snow Expected Overnight Into Thursday Morning

Strong north winds will develop behind the passage of a cold front late tonight and Thursday across central and eastern Kansas. Wind gusts to around 40 mph can be expected across central Kansas and will be accompanied by light snow. The snow and wind may reduce driving visibility in blowing snow.

An area of low pressure and a strong cold front will move across central and eastern Kansas late tonight. Rain showers will change to snow behind the front and will be accompanied by strong north winds. An inch or two of snow accumulation is possible across central and northern Kansas. The snow and strong winds may impact travel early Thursday with slick travel possible with blowing snow reducing visibility.

A brief period of freezing drizzle or light freezing rain is possible across the Flint Hills and eastern Kansas on Thursday as rain transitions to light snow or flurries. Some slick travel is possible.

  • Today – Mostly cloudy, with a high near 62. Breezy, with a south wind 18 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph.
  • Tonight – Rain showers likely before 3 a.m., then rain and snow showers between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m., then snow after 4 a.m. Low around 25. Blustery, with a south wind 13 to 18 mph becoming north northwest 20 to 25 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
  • Thursday – Snow likely before noon. Patchy blowing snow after noon. Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 27. Windy, with a north northwest wind 22 to 30 mph, with gusts as high as 39 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.
  • Thursday Night – Mostly clear, with a low around 9. Wind chill values as low as -2. Blustery, with a north northwest wind 15 to 20 mph decreasing to 7 to 12 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph.
  • Friday – Partly sunny, with a high near 30. North wind 5 to 8 mph becoming southeast in the afternoon.
