A Salina woman is in custody and facing several charges after damaging a vehicle she allegedly took without permission.
According to police, Mahala Shepherd, 24, took a 2001 Chevy Tahoe owned by Ronald Smith of Salina, without his consent sometime after 6 p.m. Friday evening.
Shepherd allegedly drove the vehicle through the 3100 block of Foxboro Drive, jumped a curb, drove through several yards, and struck decorative planter. She then drove through another yard in the 3000 block of Foxboro and struck a tree.
Police say witnesses saw Shepherd climb out of the driver’s side window of the SUV and run to her home in the 1300 block of Crescent, where she was arrested in the front yard without further incident. Shepherd was transported to Salina Regional Health Center for treatment.
Shepherd was later booked into the Saline County Jail on numerous requested charges including driving under the influence, five counts of failure to report an accident, three counts of improper driving on a laned roadway, driving without insurance, driving without a license, deprivation of property, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Police say the Chevy Tahoe valued at $2,500 is a total loss.
