When Captain Lynn Lopez took the call to come to Salina, she had no idea what that meant, but, she would not change it for anything.

Saturday, December 2nd was National I’ll Fight Day. A day when Salvation Army locations around the country put individual ideas into motion to achieve a much bigger goal.

The idea for the Salina location, 1137 N. Santa Fe, is to fill the Red Kettles as full as possible. The idea was called “I’ll Fight Poverty with Love.” 100% of Red Kettle donations collected yesterday went directly toward fighting that cause.

National I’ll Fight Day is annually the first Saturday in December. For Captain Lopez, the weekend came rather quickly. Especially, since she’s only been in Salina for 10 months.

One of those months was spent in Texas assisting in the Hurricane Harvey relief effort.

While the month spent in Texas was fulfilling, Lopez was happy to be home, where she is able to focus on what she has been called to do. That, she believes, is seeing superstars come out of the shadows. She has faith that the North side of Salina will see a lot of those superstars turn into what they were truly meant to be.

The next big event for the Salina Salvation Army is the Marine Toy Box. While donations of unopened toys are being accepted, Captain Lopez says that from December 15-22, walk-in appointments are welcome, specifically for low-income grandparents.
