MCPHERSON – The photography of Kristen Garlow Piper will be on display in the McPherson Public Library meeting room from March 1 to April 30 with an artist reception on Sunday, April 15, 2 to 4 p.m. Piper’s show “Home Again” is a collection of photographs depicting her interpretation of how her hometown of Hutchinson looks today.
” As a photojournalist, my photography tends to have a storytelling aspect,” Piper stated. “In the coming years – wherever I’m living – I’ll be able to look at these images and remember my Kansas roots and know where I’m from.” Piper graduated in 1976 from the William Allen White School of Journalism at the University of Kansas with a degree in photojournalism. She worked for several newspapers before going into freelance work in the 1980s. Piper returned to Hutchinson in 2009 where, in addition to her freelance work, she documents historic renovations that have included the Wiley Building, the Catalyst Lofts, the Hutchinson Art Center and the restoration of the Fox Theater’s vertical marquee.
Piper is a guest columnist for Hutchinson Magazine featuring “Through Her Eyes” and is a regular contributor to The Hutchinson News and Kansas! Magazine. She is the photographer for the Hutchinson Symphony Orchestra, the Cosmosphere and Hutchinson’s community theater group Stage 9. She owns Kristen Garlow Piper Photography and has twice been the artist-in-residence at Lester Raymer’s Red Barn Student in Lindsborg, Kan.
