A Culver man is in custody after leading authorities on a brief pursuit Thursday afternoon.
The Saline County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy observed the driver of 1992 Chevy Silverado that was not wearing a seat belt at about 1:45 p.m. near the intersection of Santa Fe and Republic.
The driver, Jeremy Welch, 39, sped off east on Republic, then south on 4th Street, west on Beloit, where he allegedly ran a stop sign at Santa Fe Avenue. He turned south onto Santa Fe and then east on Minneapolis Avenue, where he fled from the pickup, leaving in the middle of the street in the 100 block of E. Minneapolis.
Salina Police Officers assisted with the search for Welch, which lasted nearly 15 minutes, until he was found hiding behind a book shelf on the back porch of a home at 936 S. 5th.
Welch was booked into the Saline County Jail on numerous requested charges including not wearing a seat belt, flee and elude, obstruction and interference with law enforcement, reckless driving, driving without insurance, criminal trespassing and driving while suspended, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Saline County records also indicate that Welch had at least one outstanding arrest warrant.
