Boy Killed in McPherson County Farming Accident

Officials with the McPherson County Sheriff’s Office say a young boy died in a farming accident late Friday evening.

Authorities say John Avery, 33, was pulling a lawn mower with a Ford Tractor in a pasture near 3rd Avenue, about one half mile from the Reno County line, just southwest of Inman, when the accident happened.

Avery’s 9-year-old son Cayden was riding in his father’s lap at about 8:45 p.m., when the tractor hit a depression in the ground, causing the boy to fall off the tractor. He was struck by the mower and pronounced dead at the scene a short time later, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

This is the second the tractor-related fatality in McPherson County in the last six months. An 8-year-old boy died in a similar accident in November near Galva.
