Art Educator to Lead Drawing Program at the Library

SALINA – Kyle Tiernan, a self-described “renegade” art teacher from San Diego, Calif., will lead Draw Along with Kyle at 6:30 p.m. June 21, as part of Salina Public Library’s Summer at the Library. The interactive program, designed for ages 5 and older, will be in the library’s Prescott Room.

Since 2003, Tiernan has worked with more than a million kindergarten through sixth-grade students during fully interactive school and library summer reading programs. Using an overhead projector and screen, he leads the group step-by-step through three drawing lessons tied together by a theme and stories. Children will have their own supplies so that they can follow along and will have completed drawing to take home at the end of the program.

Summer at the Library includes art programs, like Draw Along with Kyle; children’s performers; storytimes; discovery programs; math, reading and technology classes; and family movies. The library is calling on the community to demonstrate the value of reading by helping to reach the goal of 25,000 books read. Each book read this summer, from May 21 to July 20, can be logged toward the goal. As of June 12, 5,598 books have been logged.
